Tire Pressure Explained

Most of us know we are familiar with the importance of keeping your tires properly inflated, but do you know your tires need to be correctly inflated at all times? Properly inflated tires are imperative to ensuring the longevity and safety of your vehicle, along with preventing costly repairs.

If you are driving on underinflated or overinflated tires, you might find yourself dealing with a blowout and loss of control while driving. Properly inflated tires also help your fuel economy -- driving on an underinflated tire costs about 0.2 percent inefficiency. If your tire pressure is low by 10 pounds, you are giving up 2 percent of your entire fuel economy. Proper tire pressure makes a difference!

How do you know what the proper tire pressure is? Each vehicle has a placard located on the driver-side door jamb behind the seat. This placard will list the proper tire inflation for each tire, along with letting you know if your vehicle has a spare tire. The vehicle’s manufacturer develops these numbers. However, if your car does not have one of these placards, the numbers will be located in your owner’s manual or from the dealer’s service department.

It is essential to keep in mind that these numbers indicate the tire pressure when measured first thing in the morning before your tires have warmed up. When your tires are warmed up, the tire pressure number of measurements will naturally change.
