Although we’ll take care of all your brake service and repair needs, we’d like to provide a brief overview of how brakes work. Knowledge facilitates a productive conversation about the repairs your car needs and that you approve. When you apply a small amount of pressure to your brake pedal, an amazing chain of events is set in motion. A level and piston force brake fluid from the master cylinder, where it’s stored through brake lines (hoses) toward another cylinder at each wheel. There, the fluid (hydraulic) force moves brake calipers. These force the brake pads into contact with rotors (big discs at each wheel). The friction between the metal pads and rotors slows and stops your automobile. If you have drum brakes–typically found on older models or on the back wheels only of newer vehicles–the process works similarly. However, brake shoes contact drums turning at each wheel to generate friction and a safe stop.
