BEST MOVIES AND DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT CARS

Are you planning to take some fun road trips this summer? Or do you prefer staying closer to home and hanging out with your friends and family? Either way, after a long day of driving, swimming, hiking, or dozing in a hammock, you might be in the mood to stream some great movies or documentaries…about cars! But…how do you choose? The Auto Experts has you covered with these recommendations for some of the best movies and documentaries about cars and car culture:

  • Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) Will Ferrell and company are hilarious in this over-the-top comedy about NASCAR racing.
  • The Car (1977) This cult horror flick is so bad it’s good. An evil car terrorizes a small town. The dark side of the “driverless car.”
  • The Great Race (1965) Set at the turn of the 20th Century, this comedy features a dashing hero, a beautiful suffragist journalist, and a black-clad, mustachioed villain. Also, a polar bear gets into someone’s car for some reason.
  • Heart Like a Wheel (1983) A 1950s housewife overcomes obstacles to excel (accelerate?) in the macho world of drag racing.
  • Taxi Driver (1976) A troubled cab driver cruises the streets of New York City every night, fantasizing about saving the world by taking a stand against the “filth.”
  • Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) In a post-Apocalyptic wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy attempt to flee a murderous cult leader and his army in a massive armored tanker truck. Mayhem ensues.
  • Sunday Driver (2005) A documentary about the Majestics, California’s oldest African-American lowrider club, founded in 1972 in Compton. The film features candid interviews with the club members, who describe the origins of the club, what it really means to be a Majestic, and how they support one another and their community.
  • Who Killed the Electric Car? (2006) Gas-electric hybrid and all-electric vehicles are incredibly popular today, so it might be difficult to believe how relentlessly many special-interest groups fought to stop their development barely two decades ago. In this documentary, filmmaker Chris Paine describes how car makers, the oil industry, and even some representatives of the California State and United States Federal governments, among others, teamed up to destroy the first successful battery electric vehicles in the United States. On a more upbeat note, Paine’s documentary Revenge of the Electric Car had its world premiere in 2011 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

More fantastic movies and documentaries about cars include:

  • The Fast and the Furious (Franchise 2001-2021)

  • Love the Beast (2009 documentary)
  • Cars (2006)
